Turkey
Istanbul is the world's only metropolis spanning two continents. In its 1,700-year history it has served as the capital of the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman empires — today every corner carries traces of a mosque, church, or palace. The Historic Peninsula (Sultanahmet, Eminönü) is on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
But Istanbul is far more than a museum — Beyoğlu nightlife, Karaköy's third-wave coffee, Kadıköy's traditional shops, Bosphorus fish restaurants, Beşiktaş breakfast streets… each district has a different soul. The same goes for the food: Turkish breakfast, balık-ekmek, kebab, döner, baklava, Turkish coffee.
When to visit
Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) are ideal — neither too hot nor cold, with manageable crowds.
Getting around
Metro, tram, ferry, and funicular cover the city. Get an Istanbulkart — it works on all of them.
