Tokyo holds the most Michelin stars in the world and runs on perhaps the planet's most advanced rail network. Shibuya's pedestrian crossing, Shinjuku's neon streets, Asakusa's old quarters, Akihabara's electronics, Ginza's boutiques — each district is a different Japan.

Sushi, ramen, tempura, yakitori, mochi… even a random Tokyo counter serves excellent food. On the historic side: Sensō-ji, Meiji Shrine, the Imperial Palace; on the modern side: Roppongi Hills, Tokyo Skytree.

Late March - early April (cherry blossoms) and October-November (autumn foliage) are the most beautiful.

The JR Yamanote line loops the city center. Get a Suica/Pasmo card — it works on all metros and buses.
